Boundary Setting in AI

Begin With a Purposeful Prompt

When asking AI for help, it can be tempting to jump straight to the answer and skip the problem-solving process. You can avoid this by setting clear boundaries for AI assistance: use AI tools to brainstorm ideas or verify your solutions, but always complete the core tasks yourself.

Core tasks are the “critical thinking” parts of an assignment. For example, writing an essay is a core task, while drafting an outline for it may not be. Moreover, what may be considered a core task may be different based on what your teacher is trying to teach.  If your teacher is teaching students out to outline an essay, then outlining could be a core task. Doing these core tasks on your own not only strengthens your critical thinking and writing skills but also builds confidence in your ability to handle academic challenges.

One way to establish boundaries is by using a prompt like this:

After inputting this prompt, ChatGPT will provide questions, ideas, and suggestions to help guide your work—but it won’t do the work for you. By setting these boundaries, you get the best of both worlds: AI becomes a supportive study partner, not a substitute for your own effort. Over time, this practice helps you develop independence, sharpen problem-solving skills, and build lasting confidence in your academic abilities.

Always reflect on what qualifies as a core task. No matter how advanced AI becomes, it remains artificial intelligence.  It can never replace your own thinking. If you rely on it to produce full answers or essays, you weaken your ability to think critically for yourself. Focus instead on becoming a smarter, more self-reliant, and independent learner.
