AI as a Study Tool

Aside from helping with assignments, AI has great potential as a study aid as well.  It’s basically like having a free personal tutor! When given a course syllabus, AI can generate monthly, weekly, or daily study plans. For instance, if you upload or paste your syllabus into ChatGPT and ask for a study schedule, it might suggest when to review certain chapters, prep for quizzes, or start working on big projects. While you’ll still need to adjust the schedule based on your own pace and other commitments, it’s a great way to stay organized and avoid last-minute stress.

Beyond creating study plans, AI can instantly explain problems you’re struggling with, giving you quick and reliable feedback. Based on those problems, it can even generate unlimited practice questions to help you prepare for upcoming quizzes or tests. Below are some example prompts you can use to get accurate answers from ChatGPT—and to understand the reasoning behind them. You can also upload pictures of your homework so the AI better understands the kinds of problems you’re solving.

Example Prompts

Understanding Concepts:

  • “Explain [topic] to me as if I were a beginner.”
  • “Break down [concept] step by step without solving it directly.”
  • “Give me a real-world example of how [concept] is applied.”

Practice and Problem Solving:

  • “Give me 3 practice problems on [topic], ranging from easy to difficult.”
  • “Create a problem that requires applying both [concept A] and [concept B].”
  • “Make a 5-question multiple-choice quiz on [topic].”

Another great use of ChatGPT is generating questions or quizzes to test your knowledge of your class’s current book. This not only helps boost your next grade but also strengthens your long-term memory for final exams. AI can create flashcards and personalized practice tests that target your weakest areas, making your study time much more effective.

While these prompts are useful for almost any subject, we also have more in-depth guides on how to use AI responsibly for both MATH/SCIENCE and ENGLISH subjects

Quick Tip: You can use separate ChatGPT chat strands for separate topics! For example, you can have a strand for a math concept you’re struggling with, a strand for the book you’re reading in English class, a strand to study for your History class, etc. This is very effective because ChatGPT will remember what you’ve previously written, what practice problems you got wrong and what topics you have been studying.
